Ask: 'What kinds of jobs or resources does a community need to make money and survive?' Briefly connect student answers to the North and South during the Civil War.
Turn and talk with group members, then share one idea about jobs or resources.
Present a short explanation of Civil War economics: the North had more factories, railroads, and workers in industry; the South depended more on farming and enslaved labor. Point out how these differences affected supplies, weapons, and transportation.
Listen, take notes on the comparison sheet, and highlight key words.
Give each group a simple compare-and-contrast chart with two columns labeled North and South. Circulate, prompt with questions, and support groups as needed.
Work together to sort facts into the correct column and write one sentence explaining which side had an advantage in industry and transportation.
Invite one or two groups to share answers. Clarify any confusion and restate the main economic differences.
Present one fact from their chart and listen to other groups.
Ask students to complete the sentence: 'During the Civil War, the North/South had an economic advantage because...'
Say or write one complete sentence to show understanding.
Students restate one economic difference between the North and South and explain which side had the stronger advantage in one area.
Formative assessment: collect and review the group comparison chart and the closure sentence to check understanding of Civil War economic differences.
