Theme | Small Group
In this 30-minute small-group lesson, students will analyze a short text to identify a theme and support it with evidence from the story. The lesson emphasizes clear written responses and academic discussion for advanced Grade 5 learners.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| theme | the message, lesson, or big idea the author wants the reader to understand |
| evidence | details from the text that support an idea or answer |
| character | a person or animal in a story |
| lesson | something a reader learns from a story or experience |
| support | to explain an idea using details from the text |
Ask students what a story can teach us. Record a few responses and introduce theme as the message or lesson behind a story.
Share ideas about messages from familiar stories and listen for the definition of theme.
Read a short excerpt aloud. Think aloud to identify repeating actions, character choices, and events that reveal a possible theme. Model a response using a sentence stem such as, 'The theme is __ because __.'
Follow along, annotate key details, and listen to the teacher model how to infer theme.
Ask students to work together to name one theme and collect two text details that support it. Prompt students to go beyond one-word answers and explain their thinking.
Discuss the text, cite details, and collaborate to state a theme with evidence.
Provide a writing prompt: 'What is a theme of the story? Explain how the characters and events help show it.' Circulate and confer with students, giving feedback on clarity and evidence.
Write a short paragraph identifying the theme and supporting it with at least two details from the text.
Invite one or two students to share their responses. Reinforce strong examples of evidence and clear theme statements.
Listen to peers, compare responses, and revise thinking if needed.
Restate that a theme is the message or lesson of a story, and that strong writers support theme with evidence from the text. Ask students to share one word that describes the story’s message.
Collect the short written response and assess whether the student identified an appropriate theme and explained it with at least two supporting details from the text.
