Story Elements | Mini Lesson
Students will learn to identify the main story elements—character, setting, problem, events, and solution—in a short story and use them to strengthen their own writing.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Character | The people or animals in a story. |
| Setting | When and where the story happens. |
| Problem | The main trouble or challenge in the story. |
| Events | The important things that happen in order. |
| Solution | How the problem is solved at the end. |
Ask students to name a favorite story and prompt: Who was in it? Where did it happen? What went wrong?
Share quick responses and listen for story element language.
Define each story element using a simple anchor chart. Model identifying the elements in a short familiar story or read-aloud.
Follow along, repeat key terms, and help identify each element.
Read a short story aloud again and pause to ask students to help name the character, setting, problem, events, and solution.
Answer orally and complete the graphic organizer with the class.
Ask students to write a quick story idea using all five story elements in a notebook or organizer.
Plan a simple story by filling in each element.
Invite 1-2 students to share one story element from their idea and restate the five elements.
Share responses and listen for correct use of vocabulary.
Review the five story elements together and ask students to complete the sentence: 'A story needs characters, a setting, a problem, events, and a solution because ____. '
Students will complete a simple story elements organizer for the read-aloud and create a brief original story plan showing all five story elements.
Choose a book, movie, or story from home and write one sentence for each story element: character, setting, problem, events, and solution.
