Life Cycles | Centers
Students rotate through robotics centers to investigate and model the life cycle of a chosen animal. They use simple coding, sequencing, and design thinking to program a robot or digital device to represent each stage of a life cycle and explain how living things change over time.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| life cycle | The stages a living thing goes through as it grows and changes. |
| sequence | The order in which events happen. |
| organism | A living thing. |
| stage | One part of a life cycle. |
| metamorphosis | A major change in body form during development, such as a caterpillar becoming a butterfly. |
| program | A set of instructions given to a robot or computer. |
Show a simple life cycle image and ask students what changes they notice over time. Introduce the goal: use robotics to model a life cycle sequence.
Observe, respond to questions, and review the idea that living things grow and change in an order.
Guide students to arrange animal life cycle cards in correct order and justify their choices.
Work in pairs to sequence cards, check accuracy, and record the stages on their sheet.
Model how to use the coding app or robot commands to move from one stage to the next using directions, turns, or number sequences.
Program a robot or digital path to travel through labeled life cycle stages in order, revising code when needed.
Provide materials for students to create a simple model, map, or robot pathway that represents each stage of the life cycle.
Design a model, label each stage, and prepare a short explanation connecting the model to the real life cycle.
Invite groups to present one model and explain how their code or design showed the sequence of stages.
Share their work, listen to peers, and compare different life cycle models.
Review the idea that life cycles happen in a specific sequence and that robots can help us model patterns and order. Ask students to name one stage and one way they used robotics to show it.
Students will be assessed using a teacher checklist and the group recording sheet for correct sequencing, accurate life cycle explanations, and successful use of coding or robotics to represent the sequence.
