Matter | Review Lesson
Students will review the basic properties of matter, including solids, liquids, and gases. Through discussion, sorting, and quick practice tasks, they will recall key facts and show understanding in a simple assessment.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Matter | Anything that has mass and takes up space. |
| Solid | A state of matter with a fixed shape and a fixed volume. |
| Liquid | A state of matter with no fixed shape, but a fixed volume. |
| Gas | A state of matter with no fixed shape and no fixed volume. |
| Mass | The amount of matter in an object. |
| Volume | The space an object or substance takes up. |
Ask quick review questions: What is matter? Name the three states of matter. Show 3-4 familiar objects and ask students to classify them.
Answer orally, share ideas, and activate prior knowledge.
Review the definitions of matter, solid, liquid, and gas. Use simple examples and emphasize shape and volume.
Listen, repeat vocabulary, and take brief notes.
Give students sorting cards or pictures. Model one example, then have students work with a partner to sort items into solids, liquids, and gases.
Sort items, explain choices to a partner, and correct mistakes with teacher support.
Review the sorting together. Ask why each item belongs in its group and address common misunderstandings.
Share answers, compare reasoning, and participate in discussion.
Ask students to complete a short review sheet or draw three objects and label each as solid, liquid, or gas.
Work independently to show understanding.
Give a short exit ticket with 3 questions: define matter, name one solid, and identify the state of water in a cup.
Complete the exit ticket before leaving.
Review the three states of matter one more time and ask students to share one new thing they remembered about matter.
Students will complete a short exit ticket and participate in class sorting and discussion to demonstrate understanding of matter.
