Percentages | Small Group
In this small-group Grade 5 health lesson, students interpret simple percentage data related to healthy habits, such as sleep, hydration, screen time, and physical activity. Students use percentages to compare choices, discuss health impacts, and make evidence-based recommendations.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| percentage | A number out of 100 that shows part of a whole. |
| data | Information collected and organized for learning. |
| survey | A set of questions used to gather information from a group. |
| healthy habit | A regular action that supports the body and mind, such as sleeping well or drinking water. |
| compare | To look at two or more things to see how they are alike or different. |
Display a simple health-related example, such as '60% of students drank water at lunch.' Ask what the number means and what it tells us about the group.
Share ideas aloud and explain the meaning of 60% in their own words.
Model how to read a small chart with 3-4 health habits and percentages. Think aloud about which habit is most common, least common, and what the data suggests about student health choices.
Follow along, answer guiding questions, and identify patterns in the chart.
Give pairs or small groups percentage cards with health habits such as sleep, exercise, water, and screen time. Guide students to arrange them from highest to lowest and discuss what each percentage might mean.
Work together to order the cards, compare the data, and explain their reasoning.
Present a short scenario, such as 'Only 35% of students get 60 minutes of exercise daily.' Ask groups to suggest one realistic health improvement based on the data and support it with the percentage.
Discuss the scenario, choose one recommendation, and prepare a brief explanation using the data.
Invite groups to share their recommendation and reasoning. Record strong examples of math language and health language on the board.
Present ideas, listen to others, and compare solutions.
Ask students to finish the sentence: 'Percentages help us understand health because...'
Respond orally or in writing with one clear idea about how percentages support healthy decisions.
Review that percentages help us describe parts of a group and make informed health choices. Reinforce that data can show where a habit is strong and where improvement may help.
