Ecosystems | Mini Lesson
Students learn and practice basic ecosystem vocabulary in the target language through pictures, guided speaking, and a short collaborative activity. The lesson focuses on recognizing common ecosystem elements and using simple sentence frames to describe them.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| ecosystem | A natural place where living things and nonliving things work together. |
| plant | A living thing that grows and makes food from sunlight. |
| animal | A living thing that eats, moves, and breathes. |
| water | A liquid that living things need to survive. |
| sunlight | Light from the sun that helps plants grow. |
| forest | A place with many trees and living things. |
| pond | A small area of still water where animals and plants live. |
| desert | A dry place with very little rain and special plants and animals. |
Show 2-3 ecosystem pictures. Say the target language words slowly and point to each image. Ask students to repeat.
Repeat the words, point to pictures, and share any words they already know.
Present the key words with pictures and quick gestures. Model pronunciation and meaning. Write the words on the board with simple labels or translations if helpful.
Choral repeat each word and match words to pictures.
Lead a call-and-response activity: 'I see a __ in the __.' Use pictures of forest, pond, and desert ecosystems. Model one example, then invite students to complete the sentence.
Complete sentence frames orally with teacher support.
Give pairs 3-4 picture cards. Ask them to sort the cards into ecosystem groups and say one sentence about each group using the frame 'This is a __. I see __.'
Work with a partner to sort cards and practice speaking in the target language.
Invite a few pairs to share one ecosystem description with the class. Correct gently and restate accurate language.
Listen to classmates and share one short sentence if called on.
Review the key words and ask quick yes/no or either/or questions. Model correct pronunciation one more time.
Respond orally and listen for final review.
Students review the vocabulary by naming one ecosystem word they remember and one place where it might be found. The teacher ends with a brief chant or repeat-after-me review of the target words.
Students draw an ecosystem at home and label it with 3-5 target vocabulary words in the foreign language.
