Government | Substitute Teacher
Students explore why governments exist, how they affect daily life, and how taxes help fund public goods and services. The lesson is designed for a substitute teacher and includes clear routines, discussion, and hands-on practice.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| government | The group of people and rules that help run a community, state, or country. |
| public goods | Things everyone can use, such as roads, parks, and schools. |
| public services | Jobs or help provided for people, such as police, firefighters, and libraries. |
| taxes | Money people and businesses pay to help fund government services. |
| community | A group of people living, working, or learning in the same area. |
Write the question on the board: 'What things in our daily lives are paid for or managed by government?' Ask students to think quietly, then share ideas. List responses and guide them toward roads, schools, police, parks, and trash collection.
Think-pair-share, then contribute ideas to the class list.
Explain that governments make rules, keep order, and provide services people need. Briefly define local, state, and national government using simple examples. Connect taxes to paying for these services.
Listen, take notes, and answer quick questions during the explanation.
Read aloud or display several examples: library, army, road repair, fire department, classroom school supplies, national park, police, passport, city bus. Ask students to sort each as local, state, or national when appropriate, and as public good or public service. Discuss that some items can fit more than one category.
Work individually or in pairs to sort the examples and explain their choices.
Give students a short scenario: 'A town wants to build a new playground and fix a broken road. The town does not have enough money.' Ask students to answer: What can government do? Why might taxes matter? Who benefits? Encourage complete sentences and reasoning.
Write a response, then share with a partner or the class.
Review the key idea that government helps communities by making rules and providing services funded by taxes. Ask a few final review questions and correct misunderstandings.
Answer review questions and restate the main idea in their own words.
Ask students to finish the sentence: 'One important job of government is...' Collect a few responses to reinforce the lesson’s main idea.
Write 5 to 7 sentences explaining one public service you use and how government helps support it. Include the words government and taxes.
