Theme | Review Lesson
Students will review the concept of theme in literature and practice identifying a theme in a short text using evidence from the story. The lesson includes guided practice, partner discussion, and a short independent writing task.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| theme | The big message or lesson the author wants readers to learn. |
| evidence | Details from the text that support an idea or answer. |
| character | A person or animal in a story. |
| lesson | Something learned from an experience or story. |
Ask students what a story can teach us. Review the idea that some stories have a message or lesson. Write the word theme and introduce the lesson objective.
Share ideas with a partner and give examples of lessons from familiar stories.
Review the definition of theme and explain how theme is different from a topic. Model with a simple example, such as 'friendship' as a topic and 'Friends help each other during hard times' as a theme.
Listen, take notes, and answer quick oral questions.
Read a short story aloud. Pause to ask guiding questions: What happened? What did the character learn? What message does the story teach? Record student ideas on the board.
Turn and talk, share answers, and help build a theme statement with the class.
Give students a practice handout with a short passage. Circulate and support pairs as they identify the theme and list two text details that support it.
Work with a partner to identify the theme and find evidence from the text.
Ask students to write a short response naming the theme and explaining it with at least two details from the story.
Write independently in complete sentences.
Invite a few students to share responses. Reinforce strong theme statements and evidence-based explanations.
Listen respectfully and compare responses.
Revisit the definition of theme and ask students to complete the sentence: 'A theme is...' Remind them that theme is the message the author wants readers to learn.
Students will complete a short written response identifying the theme of the class text and supporting it with at least two details from the story. Teacher will assess for accurate theme identification, evidence use, and clear writing.
Choose a favorite story, fable, or movie and write 3-4 sentences naming its theme and one detail that shows it.
