Inference | Independent Practice
Students will practice making inferences by using clues from short texts and images, then explaining how they know. The lesson focuses on independent practice with brief teacher support and check-ins.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Inference | A conclusion you make using clues and what you already know. |
| Clue | A detail in the text or picture that helps you figure something out. |
| Evidence | Words or details that support an inference. |
| Conclusion | The answer or idea you decide is most likely true. |
Display a picture with clear clues. Model a quick think-aloud: 'I see ___. I know ___. So I infer ___.' Review the meaning of inference and evidence.
Observe the picture, share one or two ideas, and repeat the inference sentence frame with the teacher.
Read one short passage aloud. Ask students to highlight clues and help choose the best inference. Write the class response on the board.
Identify clues in the passage, explain their thinking, and record the modeled inference on their organizer.
Give students 3-4 inference tasks to complete on their own. Circulate, prompt with questions, and provide brief support as needed.
Work independently to read each passage or view each image, underline clues, and write an inference with evidence for each item.
Pause the class for a quick mid-lesson check. Invite a few students to share one answer and explain the clue that led to it. Clarify misconceptions.
Compare answers, listen to peers, and revise work if needed based on feedback.
Review the key idea: good inferences are based on clues plus what we already know. Collect exit tickets.
Complete a short exit ticket explaining one inference and the clue that supports it.
Students restate that an inference is a smart guess based on clues and prior knowledge. They turn in an exit ticket showing one inference and one piece of evidence.
Formative assessment will include the independent practice pages, teacher observation during work time, and the exit ticket. Success is shown when students identify relevant clues and write logical inferences supported by evidence.
