Energy | Standard Lesson
Students learn that robots need energy to work and explore simple sources of energy, how energy moves through a robot, and why power management matters. They practice identifying energy use in a robot system and connect the idea to safe, efficient robot operation.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| energy | The power something needs to do work or make something happen. |
| battery | A small source of stored energy that can power a robot or device. |
| power | The energy a robot uses to operate. |
| sensor | A part of a robot that helps it notice things around it. |
| motor | A part of a robot that changes energy into movement. |
Show a robot picture or toy and ask, 'What does a robot need to move and work?' Record student ideas and guide them toward the word energy.
Share ideas, listen to classmates, and predict what powers a robot.
Explain that robots need energy to run motors, sensors, and controllers. Show a battery and connect it to a simple example: energy in a battery can help a robot move or light up.
Listen, repeat key vocabulary, and point to parts of the robot that need energy.
Ask students to sort examples into 'needs energy' or 'does not need energy' using quick oral prompts: moving wheels, blinking lights, plastic shell, sensor, button, motor.
Respond orally and explain their thinking using the word energy.
Have students draw a robot and label one part that uses energy and one energy source, or complete a quick sentence: 'My robot needs energy to ___.’
Complete the drawing or sentence independently.
Invite 1-2 students to share their work and restate the main idea: robots need energy to perform tasks.
Share responses and listen for the key idea.
End by having students complete the sentence: 'A robot needs energy to ___.’ Revisit the vocabulary words energy and battery, and remind students that energy helps robots move, sense, and work.
Teacher observes student responses during guided practice and reviews the independent drawing or sentence for correct understanding of robot energy and one energy source.
