Character Analysis | Independent Practice
Students will independently read a short text and analyze a character using evidence from the story. They will identify character traits, explain actions, and support ideas with details from the text.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| character trait | A word that describes what a character is like, such as brave, kind, or stubborn. |
| evidence | Details from the text that support an idea or answer. |
| analysis | Thinking carefully about parts of a story to explain what they mean. |
| actions | What a character does in the story. |
| traits | Special qualities that describe a character's personality. |
Explain the goal: students will analyze a character independently using text evidence. Review the meaning of character trait, evidence, and analysis. Model how to look for clues in the text without fully completing the task for students.
Listen, review vocabulary, and prepare materials.
Distribute the passage and remind students to read carefully. Ask them to underline or highlight words and actions that reveal the character's personality.
Read the passage silently and mark important details about the character.
Direct students to complete the organizer by listing the character's traits, matching each trait with evidence, and explaining how the evidence supports the trait.
Work independently to fill in the organizer using details from the text.
Prompt students to write a short paragraph explaining the character's traits and using at least two pieces of evidence from the story. Remind them to use complete sentences.
Write an independent character analysis paragraph.
Provide a simple checklist: trait named, evidence included, explanation given, complete sentences, capitals and punctuation checked.
Review their work and make revisions as needed.
Collect student paragraphs and organizers for scoring using the rubric. Ask one or two quick oral reflection questions if time allows.
Submit completed work and respond briefly if called on.
Bring the class together for a quick share-out. Ask students to name one trait they discovered and one detail that helped them figure it out. Reinforce that strong character analysis uses evidence from the text, not just opinions.
Students will be assessed on their completed graphic organizer and character analysis paragraph. Scoring should focus on accurate traits, relevant evidence, clear explanations, and basic writing conventions.
