Time | Review Lesson
Students will review the concept of time in music by identifying steady beat, rhythm patterns, and tempo through listening, movement, and short performance activities. This 20-minute lesson is designed to refresh prior learning and check understanding in a quick, engaging way.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| beat | The steady pulse in music that stays the same. |
| rhythm | The pattern of long and short sounds in music. |
| tempo | How fast or slow the music is. |
| steady beat | A beat that repeats regularly at the same speed. |
| fast | A quick tempo. |
| slow | A tempo that moves at a gentle pace. |
Clap a steady beat and ask students to echo it. Remind them that the beat stays the same.
Echo the clap pattern and tap the steady beat on their knees or desks.
Display beat, rhythm, and tempo. Give short definitions and model each with claps or a drum.
Repeat the words, show the meanings with motions, and give examples with teacher support.
Play two short music clips with different tempos. Ask students to move in place to the steady beat and then show with thumbs up/down whether the music is fast or slow.
Move to the beat, listen carefully, and identify tempo changes using gestures.
Clap a short rhythm pattern and have students copy it. Increase difficulty slightly for a second pattern.
Listen, repeat the rhythm accurately, and correct as needed.
Ask rapid-fire questions such as: "What is the beat?" "Is this rhythm or beat?" "Is this tempo fast or slow?"
Respond orally, by pointing, or with hand signals.
Review the three key ideas: beat is steady, rhythm is the pattern of sounds, and tempo is how fast or slow music moves. End by having the class tap one final steady beat together.
Formative assessment will be based on student responses during listening, movement, and echo activities, as well as their ability to identify beat, rhythm, and tempo correctly during quick questioning.
At home, find one song and tell a family member whether it has a fast, medium, or slow tempo. Draw a simple symbol or write one sentence to describe the beat or rhythm.
