Time | Independent Practice
Students practice reading analog and digital clocks, matching times, and solving simple time questions independently. The lesson is designed for independent practice with brief teacher check-ins.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| hour | A unit of time made of 60 minutes. |
| minute | A smaller unit of time; 60 minutes make 1 hour. |
| o'clock | The time when the minute hand is on 12. |
| a.m. | Time from midnight to noon. |
| p.m. | Time from noon to midnight. |
Display 2 to 3 clock faces and ask students to name the times silently or on paper.
Look at each clock and write or point to the time.
Briefly review how the hour hand and minute hand work, and model one example of reading time to the nearest 5 minutes.
Listen, watch, and ask clarifying questions if needed.
Give students a worksheet with analog clocks. Circulate and support as needed.
Individually write the digital time for each analog clock.
Provide a matching or sorting activity with digital times and clock faces.
Match the correct analog and digital times and check their own work when finished.
Assign a short word-problem section about simple time reading, such as identifying what time it is or choosing the correct clock.
Complete the questions independently and show work neatly.
Go over a few answers with the class and clarify common mistakes.
Compare answers and correct work if needed.
Review the key idea that the hour hand shows the hour and the minute hand shows the minutes. Ask students to name one thing they learned about telling time.
Students will complete independent practice worksheets and matching activities. The teacher will assess accuracy in reading and writing times to the nearest 5 minutes.
