Look closely at the map, share quick ideas, and predict the answer.
Explain that Ancient Greece had many city-states. Point to Athens and Sparta on the map. Share one simple difference: Athens focused on voting and learning; Sparta focused on soldiers and discipline. Define democracy in student-friendly language.
Listen, repeat key words, and answer short questions about Athens, Sparta, and democracy.
Show two or three image cards. Ask students to sort each card under Athens, Sparta, or Ancient Greece in general. Prompt them to explain their choices using vocabulary words.
Work together to sort the cards and give one-sentence reasons using the new words.
Ask three rapid-fire questions: 'What is a city-state?' 'Which city-state used voting?' 'What was Sparta known for?' Record student answers on the board.
Respond orally or point to the correct answer when prompted.
Give each student a sticky note or mini slip. Ask them to write one fact about Ancient Greece and one difference between Athens and Sparta. Collect responses.
Write two short responses independently and hand them in.
Review the big idea: Ancient Greece was made of city-states, and Athens and Sparta were two important examples. End with a quick chant: 'City-states, democracy, Athens, Sparta!'
Students complete a short exit slip with one fact about Ancient Greece and one comparison between Athens and Sparta. The teacher reviews responses for understanding.
