Listen, think, and share ideas about the word meanings using the sentence clues.
Explain that vocabulary is the collection of words we know and use. Model how to use context clues to figure out a word’s meaning. Think aloud with one example sentence and point out clue words.
Follow along, answer questions, and help identify clue words in the example.
Give 4 to 6 simple sentences with underlined vocabulary words. Read each sentence together. Ask students to choose the meaning from two or three choices or explain the word in their own words.
Work with the teacher to solve each example and explain their thinking.
Provide pairs of common words and a sentence frame, such as happy/joyful or big/enormous. Ask students to choose the best word for each sentence and explain why.
Work with a partner to choose words, discuss choices, and share answers with the class.
Ask students to write 3 original sentences using new vocabulary words from the lesson. Circulate and support students as needed.
Write sentences, check for meaning, and use the words correctly.
Invite a few students to read one sentence aloud. Briefly review the meaning of vocabulary, context clues, synonym, antonym, and precise word.
Listen, share, and restate key ideas.
End by asking students to share one new vocabulary word and one strategy they used to figure out a word’s meaning. Remind them that strong readers and writers use precise words and context clues to understand and communicate clearly.
Choose five words from a book, magazine, or conversation at home. Write each word, its meaning, and one sentence using the word in context.
