American Revolution | Mini Lesson
In this 15-minute mini lesson, Grade 4 students will learn the main causes of the American Revolution and explain why colonists became upset with British rule. Students will analyze a few key events and connect them to the idea of protest and unfair treatment.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| colony | A place ruled by another country. |
| tax | Money people are required to pay to the government. |
| protest | A way to show you disagree with something unfair. |
| British Parliament | The group that made laws for Great Britain and its colonies. |
| patriot | A person who supported independence from Britain. |
Show an image of a colonist protesting or a simple stamp/tax picture. Ask: 'How would you feel if someone made rules for you but did not let you help make them?'
Think silently, then share quick responses with a partner.
Briefly explain that the American Revolution began because many colonists believed British laws were unfair. Introduce three causes: taxes, no representation, and strict British control. Write each on the board with a short example.
Listen, repeat key terms, and copy the three causes into notebooks.
Use a simple class prompt: 'The British taxed the colonists without asking them.' Ask students whether this was fair or unfair and why. Guide them to connect the idea of protest to the Boston Tea Party and boycotts in age-appropriate language.
Turn and talk, then share one sentence using vocabulary words.
Ask students to complete a quick response: 'One reason colonists protested was ___ because ___.'' Circulate and support as needed.
Write a 1-2 sentence response in notebooks.
Call on 2-3 students to share answers and correct misunderstandings. Reinforce that the Revolution started when colonists wanted more say in how they were governed.
Listen, respond, and revise answers if needed.
Ask: 'What is one word or event that helped lead to the American Revolution?' End by restating that colonists protested because they wanted fair treatment and a voice in government.
Formative assessment will be based on student oral responses and the written exit response. Success is shown when students can name at least one cause of the American Revolution and explain it with a simple because statement.
Write one paragraph or complete a simple worksheet: 'Why did the colonists protest British rule?' Include at least two causes and one vocabulary word.
