Fractions | Small Group
Students work in small groups to practice basic fraction language in a foreign language through speaking, listening, matching, and simple sorting activities. The lesson focuses on recognizing and using common fraction words and visual representations in a supportive, interactive setting.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| fraction | A part of a whole. |
| half | One of two equal parts. |
| third | One of three equal parts. |
| quarter | One of four equal parts. |
| equal parts | Parts that are the same size. |
| whole | One complete thing. |
Show whole shapes and cut shapes. Model the target language words for whole, half, third, and quarter. Say each word clearly and have students repeat together.
Listen, repeat the words, and point to the matching picture when the teacher says each fraction word.
Distribute fraction picture cards and word cards. Model matching one card set, then guide students to work in their groups to match symbols, pictures, and target language words.
Work with partners or in a small group to match the cards and say each match aloud.
Give a simple sentence frame such as 'I have one half' or the target-language equivalent. Model using counters or paper shapes to show the fraction and say the sentence.
Use the sentence frame to describe the fraction shown on their card or model. Repeat after peers as needed.
Set up a sorting task with mixed fraction cards. Ask groups to sort by half, third, quarter, and whole, then read each group of cards aloud in the target language.
Sort the cards into categories, then practice saying the fraction words with the group.
Ask students to complete a short recording sheet by drawing or matching the fraction and writing the target-language word if able.
Complete the recording sheet independently or with limited support.
Invite groups to share one card and one sentence using the target language. Clarify pronunciation and meaning as needed.
Share one example with the class and listen to others.
End with a quick oral review. Show one fraction card at a time and have the class say the target-language word together. Praise effort and remind students that fractions describe equal parts of a whole.
Students draw three simple shapes, divide each into halves, thirds, or quarters, and label them using the target-language fraction words learned in class. If writing is difficult, students may bring drawings with labels copied from a family word bank or classroom handout.
