Space | Review Lesson
This 20-minute Grade 4 Earth Science review lesson helps students revisit key ideas about space, including the Sun, Moon, planets, and simple patterns we observe in the sky. Students will practice recalling facts, comparing objects in space, and explaining basic relationships using short partner and whole-class activities.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Solar System | The Sun and all the objects that move around it, including planets and moons. |
| Planet | A large round object in space that orbits the Sun. |
| Moon | A natural object that orbits a planet. |
| Sun | A star at the center of our solar system that gives Earth light and heat. |
| Orbit | The path an object follows as it moves around another object in space. |
Display a picture of the solar system or write the words Sun, Moon, Earth, planet. Ask students to turn and talk: What do you remember about these objects? Call on a few students to share.
Think quietly, then share one fact with a partner and one fact with the class.
Lead a brief review using quick questions: Which object gives us light and heat? Which object orbits Earth? What do planets orbit? Correct answers and reinforce vocabulary.
Respond verbally, point to pictures, and repeat key vocabulary.
Give small groups or pairs picture cards of space objects. Ask them to sort into categories such as Sun, planets, Moon, and not in our solar system if included. Challenge students to explain why each card belongs where it does.
Sort cards, discuss choices, and use vocabulary words to justify their thinking.
Read three short statements, such as 'The Moon is a planet' or 'Earth orbits the Sun.' Students show thumbs up/down or write T/F. Ask one student to correct any false statement.
Evaluate each statement and correct mistakes using complete sentences.
Ask: 'What is one thing you learned or remembered today about space?' Invite a few quick responses and restate the main idea: space objects have different jobs and movements.
Share one key fact orally or on a sticky note.
End by summarizing that the Sun is a star, Earth is a planet, the Moon orbits Earth, and planets orbit the Sun. Remind students that scientists use careful observation and vocabulary to describe space.
