Solar System | Review Lesson
Students review key ideas about the solar system, including the Sun, planets, moons, and patterns of motion. Through discussion, sorting, drawing, and quick practice tasks, students strengthen vocabulary and show what they know about our place in space.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| solar system | The Sun and all the objects that move around it. |
| star | A hot ball of gas that gives off light and heat; the Sun is our star. |
| planet | A large round object that orbits the Sun. |
| moon | A natural object that orbits a planet. |
| orbit | The path an object follows as it moves around another object. |
| rotate | To spin around in place. |
| revolve | To move around another object in a path. |
Show a picture of the solar system and ask quick review questions: What is at the center? What do planets do? Invite students to share what they remember.
Respond orally, recall prior knowledge, and turn-and-talk with a partner.
Review the solar system using visuals. Define and point to key vocabulary words. Model the planet order with a mnemonic or chant.
Repeat vocabulary, point to matching images, and practice the planet order together.
Give small groups planet, moon, and star cards. Guide students to sort cards into categories and explain their choices.
Work with partners or groups to sort cards and justify answers using vocabulary.
Use a ball and flashlight to model rotation and revolution. Explain that Earth spins on its axis and orbits the Sun.
Observe, answer questions, and label rotation and revolution in notebooks.
Ask students to complete a short review sheet: label the solar system, order the planets, and write one sentence about a planet, moon, or star.
Work independently to show understanding in writing and drawing.
Lead a fast game such as true/false, thumbs up/down, or call-and-response to review important facts.
Respond quickly and listen to classmates' answers.
Distribute a short exit ticket with 3 questions: name the inner or outer planets, define orbit, and identify the Sun.
Complete the exit ticket before leaving.
Bring the class together to review the big ideas: the Sun is a star, planets orbit the Sun, moons orbit planets, and Earth rotates and revolves. Ask students to share one fact they learned or remembered today.
Students will be assessed through teacher observation, the independent practice sheet, and the exit ticket. Use results to identify students who need reteaching or enrichment.
Students will create a simple solar system review page at home: draw the Sun and eight planets in order, label at least four vocabulary words, and write three facts about the solar system.
