Solar System | Mini Lesson
Students will learn the basic parts of the solar system and the order of the planets through a short, interactive mini lesson.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Solar System | The Sun and all the objects that travel around it, including planets. |
| Planet | A large round object that moves around the Sun. |
| Orbit | The path a planet follows as it moves around the Sun. |
| Sun | The star at the center of our solar system. |
Show a picture of the solar system and ask, 'What do you notice?' Introduce the Sun as the center.
Observe the picture, share ideas, and listen to the introduction.
Teach the names of the eight planets in order: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune. Point to each planet on a chart as you name it.
Repeat the planet names with the teacher and point to each planet on their own chart or paper.
Ask simple questions such as 'Which planet is closest to the Sun?' and 'What do planets do around the Sun?' Use picture cards for support.
Answer questions orally and help arrange planet cards in order.
Have students write the names of any three planets and draw a quick Sun-and-planet sketch.
Complete the short written and drawing task.
Quickly revisit the main ideas: Sun at the center, planets orbit the Sun, and the planet order.
Repeat the key facts and prepare to finish the lesson.
End with a choral chant of the eight planets in order and a final reminder that the Sun is the center of our solar system.
Students will be assessed through oral responses, planet-order practice, and the short independent writing/drawing task.
