Animals | Project Based Learning
Students work in small groups to design and present a quick animal habitat poster showing how an animal’s body parts and behaviors help it survive. The lesson emphasizes observation, reasoning, and speaking like biologists.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| habitat | the place where an animal lives and gets what it needs |
| adaptation | a body part or behavior that helps an animal survive |
| structure | a body part, such as a beak, fur, or claws |
| behavior | an action an animal does, such as hiding or migrating |
| survive | to stay alive |
Show 2-3 animal pictures and ask: What body parts help this animal survive? Record a few ideas on the board.
Observe images, share quick ideas, and listen to classmates.
Define habitat, adaptation, structure, and behavior using one example animal, such as a polar bear or camel. Model one simple cause-and-effect statement: 'Thick fur helps a polar bear stay warm.'
Repeat key vocabulary and identify one adaptation from the example.
Place students in small groups and assign each group one animal. Give directions: draw the animal, label at least 2 adaptations, and add one sentence explaining how each adaptation helps it survive. Circulate to guide thinking and remind students to use evidence from the picture/card.
Work together to create the poster, discuss ideas, label adaptations, and write explanations.
Invite groups to present one adaptation and explain its function. Ask one follow-up question to press for reasoning.
Present briefly and listen respectfully to other groups.
Ask: 'Name one adaptation and explain how it helps an animal survive.' Collect sticky note responses or oral answers.
Complete the exit check and clean up materials.
Review the word adaptation and remind students that animal parts and behaviors help them survive in different habitats. Celebrate one strong idea from the class.
Formative assessment based on the group poster, oral presentation, and exit check. Students demonstrate understanding by identifying at least two animal adaptations and explaining how each helps survival.
Choose a favorite animal at home. Draw it or find a picture, then write 2 sentences: one naming an adaptation and one explaining how it helps the animal survive.
