Energy | Guided Practice
Students explore different forms of energy through hands-on stations and guided practice. They observe, compare, and describe how energy can make things move, give off light, produce sound, or create heat.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| energy | The ability to make things happen, move, or change. |
| light energy | Energy that helps us see. |
| sound energy | Energy we hear when something makes a sound. |
| heat energy | Energy that makes something warmer. |
| motion | Movement from one place to another. |
| source | Where energy comes from. |
Show a flashlight, a bell, and a toy car. Ask students what each object can do and what kind of energy it might show. Record ideas on the board.
Share observations and predict how each object uses energy.
Teach the four focus forms of energy: light, sound, heat, and motion. Model simple examples and use gestures or pictures to reinforce meaning.
Repeat key vocabulary, point to matching examples, and answer quick questions.
Guide students in turning a flashlight on and off and gently using a bell or noisemaker. Prompt them to describe what they see and hear.
Observe, discuss, and complete the first part of the recording sheet.
Demonstrate pushing a toy car or rolling a marble. Ask what made it move and what happened when the force stopped.
Test the object, describe movement, and record observations.
Compare a metal spoon and a plastic spoon after holding them in hands or placing them in warm water if available. Guide students to notice temperature differences safely.
Touch carefully, compare, and describe which item feels warmer or cooler.
Show pictures of a lamp, speaker, heater, bicycle, and sun. Lead students to match each picture with the kind of energy it shows.
Work with a partner to sort pictures and explain their choices.
Invite groups to share one observation from each station. Clarify misunderstandings and reinforce correct vocabulary.
Share findings and listen to classmates' ideas.
Ask students to complete a brief oral or written exit check: name one form of energy and describe its effect.
Respond independently to show understanding.
Review the four energy types with the class and have students complete the sentence: 'Energy helps ___.' Reinforce that energy can cause light, sound, heat, and motion.
Formative assessment through teacher observation, station responses, recording sheets, and the exit check. Use student explanations to determine whether they can identify and describe different forms of energy.
