Vocabulary | Small Group
Students will practice reading, saying, spelling, and using grade-level vocabulary words in a small-group setting. The lesson focuses on simple word meanings, sound-to-letter mapping, and correct spelling through repetition and guided practice.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| vocabulary | words that a person knows and uses |
| spell | to say or write letters in the correct order |
| meaning | what a word or sentence tells us |
| sentence | a group of words that tells a complete thought |
| word bank | a list of words to help with writing or spelling |
Show 3–5 vocabulary cards. Say each word clearly and have students repeat it. Ask, 'What does this word mean?' Give quick support if needed.
Listen, repeat each word, and share simple meanings.
Choose one word and model how to spell it aloud while writing it on the board. Break the word into sounds or chunks. Point out any tricky letters.
Watch, listen, and trace the spelling with a finger or in the air.
Hold up a word card. Ask students to read the word, spell it together, and use it in a short sentence. Repeat with several words.
Read, spell chorally, and say a simple sentence using the word.
Give students a short practice sheet or ask them to write 3 words from memory. Circulate and support as needed.
Write the words, check spelling, and complete a simple matching or fill-in task.
Review the words one last time. Ask students to choose one word and tell its meaning or use it in a sentence.
Share one word and explain or use it correctly.
End by reviewing the target words together and having students say one word they can now spell and define. Praise effort and correct use of vocabulary.
Assess students through oral spelling, participation in word meaning discussion, and the completed quick-write or matching task.
