Introduce the word main idea. Read a short, simple paragraph aloud and ask, "What is this mostly about?" Record student responses.
Listen, think, and share ideas about what the passage is mostly about.
Model how to find the main idea by looking at repeated words and important details. Write 2-3 spelling words on the board and show how they connect to the topic.
Watch, listen, and repeat the spelling words aloud.
Read a second short passage. Guide students to identify the main idea and 2 supporting details. Have students spell selected words from the passage together.
Answer questions, help name the main idea, and practice spelling the target words.
Give pairs a short paragraph and a graphic organizer. Circulate and support students as they talk about the main idea and write one sentence using a spelling word.
Work with a partner to find the main idea, list details, and write a simple sentence.
Ask students to read a short passage independently and complete a quick main idea response. Check for correct spelling in their sentence or response.
Work alone to identify the main idea and write a short response using a spelling word.
Invite a few students to share their answers. Correct spelling and restate the lesson focus.
Share responses and listen to classmates.
Review: main idea, detail, and spelling word. Ask students to tell the main idea of one familiar topic in a complete sentence.
Say the main idea aloud and review the key words.
End by having students share one thing they learned about finding the main idea and one spelling word they can now spell correctly.
Students will read a short paragraph at home, tell a family member the main idea, and write one sentence using a spelling word from the lesson.
