Character Analysis | Guided Practice
Students will practice spelling target words by analyzing a character's traits, actions, and words from a short passage. Through guided practice, they will notice how details about a character help them choose and spell key vocabulary correctly.

| character | A person or animal in a story. |
| trait | A word that describes what a character is like. |

Display a short character passage and read it aloud. Model how to notice one trait and say one spelling word from the word bank.
Listen, follow along, and say what the character is like using one or two simple words.
Reread the passage and ask guiding questions: What does the character do? What does that tell us? Write a target word on the board and model sounding it out, chunking syllables, and checking spelling.
Choral respond, help identify character traits, and practice spelling each target word with the class.
Pair students and prompt them to choose another trait from the passage. Ask them to explain their choice and spell the matching word on paper.
Work with a partner to discuss evidence, choose the best word, and write it correctly.
Invite a few students to share a trait, evidence, and spelling choice. Correct errors gently and reinforce letter patterns.
Share responses, listen to corrections, and revise spelling if needed.
Review the idea that character details help us choose the right describing words and spell them correctly. Ask students to name one trait and one spelling word they learned today.
Choose a favorite book character at home and write one sentence about the character using one trait word. Underline the trait word and practice spelling it three times.
