Word Problems | Centers
Students rotate through physical education centers that use math word problems to guide movement, teamwork, and quick decision-making. Learners solve Grade 3 level word problems involving counting, grouping, comparing, and simple operations while practicing motor skills, listening, and cooperation.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| add | Combine two or more groups to find a total. |
| subtract | Take away to find how many are left. |
| equal | The same amount on both sides. |
| group | A set of objects counted together. |
| total | The answer when groups are put together. |
| difference | How much more or less one amount is than another. |
Lead a quick movement warm-up with simple prompts such as 3 jumping jacks, 5 high knees, and 4 arm circles. Model how to listen, count, and move safely.
Follow movement directions, count aloud, and get ready for center rotations.
Review how to solve a word problem: read, identify the numbers, decide whether to add or subtract, and check the answer. Model one PE example on the board.
Listen, answer questions, and restate the steps in their own words.
Set up relay lanes with task cards. Students solve a word problem before completing the matching movement, such as 'Mia ran 4 laps and then 3 more. How many total?'
Work in pairs to solve the card, complete the relay task, and record the answer.
Place number cards and hoops on the floor. Students read a word problem, jump to the correct number group, and arrange themselves or objects to show the answer.
Solve problems by moving to the correct hoop, counting groups, and checking with a partner.
Use baskets or targets with point values. Students solve compare and subtraction problems, then toss beanbags to match the correct answer or difference.
Read the card, calculate the answer, and complete the throw challenge.
Lead a small-group circuit where students solve a multi-step word problem to unlock each movement station. Provide support as needed and monitor accuracy.
Solve the problem together, complete each movement station in order, and justify the answer to teammates.
Have groups rotate to a second round or revisit challenging centers with slightly harder cards.
Complete more problems, improve accuracy, and practice teamwork.
Guide stretching and ask students to share one problem they solved and how they solved it.
Stretch, reflect, and explain one strategy they used.
Bring the class together to review one center problem and the strategy used to solve it. Reinforce that reading carefully, identifying key information, and checking work help solve word problems in PE and in class.
Formative assessment through teacher observation, center recording sheets, partner explanations, and correct completion of movement tasks. Use student responses to determine who can solve addition, subtraction, comparison, and simple multi-step word problems independently.
