Maps | Review Lesson
Students review basic map skills by using movement, directions, and simple route-finding activities in the gym or outdoor space. The lesson combines physical activity with map reading, spatial awareness, and teamwork.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Map | A drawing that shows a place from above. |
| Legend | A part of the map that explains what symbols mean. |
| Symbol | A picture on a map that stands for something real. |
| Direction | A way to tell where to go. |
| Route | The path you follow from one place to another. |
Lead students in simple movement commands using directional words: forward, backward, left, right, turn, and stop.
Move safely in personal space while listening and responding to directions.
Show a simple classroom or gym map and review title, symbols, and legend. Ask quick questions to check understanding.
Point to map parts and name what each part tells them.
Give pairs a simple map with 4 to 5 checkpoints. Model how to start at the correct place and follow the route to each marker.
Work with a partner to move to each checkpoint in order and match the map to the space.
Set up a short relay course. Call out or show map clues and directions; teams move to the correct cone or station before returning.
Take turns completing the course, using map clues and teamwork to finish the route.
Ask students to explain how they used directions and map symbols during the lesson.
Share one strategy they used to follow the map and one map word they remember.
Guide slow walking and stretching while reviewing key vocabulary.
Follow stretching cues and settle breathing.
Bring the class together and review the big ideas: maps show places, symbols help us understand the map, and directions help us move from one place to another.
Observe students during the route-following and relay activities using a simple checklist for map vocabulary, direction-following, and cooperation. Collect or review the completed map task if used.
At home, ask a family member to help you find three map words in a book, on a sign, or in an online map. Draw one simple symbol and tell what it means.
