Context Clues | Whole Class
Students will learn how to use context clues to figure out the meaning of unfamiliar words in a health-related passage. Through whole-class reading, guided practice, discussion, and application activities, students will identify clue words, use surrounding sentences for meaning, and explain their thinking orally and in writing.

| context clues | Words and sentences around an unknown word that help tell what it means. |

Display a simple sentence with an unfamiliar word. Model how to look for nearby words that give a clue to the meaning. Introduce the day’s goal in student-friendly language.
Listen, share ideas, and tell what clues they notice in the sentence.
Read a short health sentence aloud. Think aloud to show how to reread, find clue words, and test a meaning. Record steps on an anchor chart: 1) find the unknown word, 2) read around it, 3) look for clues, 4) say the meaning in your own words.
Follow along, respond to questions, and help name the clue words.
Project or distribute a short health passage with 5 to 7 challenging words. Read the passage aloud. Pause to ask students which words are unknown and which surrounding words help. Guide the class in finding meanings together.
Underline unknown words, highlight clue words, and explain their thinking to the class.
Place students in pairs or small groups. Give each group 2 to 3 short sentences or word cards related to health topics such as exercise, hygiene, nutrition, and safety. Circulate and prompt students with questions like, “What makes you think that?”
Work together to use context clues, discuss possible meanings, and record answers in notebooks.
Invite groups to share one word and their reasoning. Write student answers on the board and sort them into categories such as exercise, food, cleanliness, or safety.
Present answers, listen to classmates, and compare different clue-based meanings.
Ask students to choose one unfamiliar health word from the lesson and write a sentence explaining its meaning using context clues. Support students who need help by rereading the passage with them.
Write a short explanation in their own words and include the clue words they used.
Review the context clues steps and restate why this reading skill helps in health class and other subjects.
Repeat the steps and share one thing they learned.
Students restate the strategy: find the unknown word, read around it, look for clues, and say the meaning in their own words. End by asking students to name one clue word or phrase they used today.
Find one unfamiliar word in a book, article, or healthy living text at home. Write the word, the sentence it appears in, the clue words, and what you think the word means.
