Geography | Project Based Learning
Students will learn how geography helps people understand where government places are located in their community. In a simple map-based project, students will identify and create a classroom map showing important local government places such as city hall, police station, fire station, and school. They will connect place, location, and community service in a hands-on way.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| map | A drawing that shows places and where they are located. |
| location | The place where something is found. |
| community | A group of people who live and work in the same area. |

| city hall | A building where leaders work and make decisions for the city. |
| symbol | A picture or mark that stands for something on a map. |
Show pictures of a city hall, fire station, police station, and school. Ask students to name the places and talk briefly about what each one does.
Students share ideas, name familiar places, and tell how these places help people.
Explain that geography helps us understand where places are. Model how a simple map uses symbols, labels, and location words such as near, next to, and across from.
Students listen, point to places on the example map, and repeat new vocabulary.
Show a sample project and explain that students will create a simple map of a community with at least three government places labeled. Give clear directions and model one step at a time.
Students look at the sample, ask questions, and get materials ready.
Circulate, support ideas, and help students place buildings and labels. Ask guiding questions such as, 'Where should the fire station go?' or 'What symbol could show city hall?'
Students draw or glue in places, add labels, color their maps, and use vocabulary words.
Invite a few students to present their maps and describe one government place and its location on the map.
Students share their projects, listen to classmates, and explain one thing they learned about geography and government.
Review the key idea that geography helps us understand where government places are in a community. Ask students to share one place they included and one way maps help people.
