Students will learn to use context clues to determine the meaning of unfamiliar words in a grade-level text. Through teacher-led modeling, guided practice, partner work, and quick checks, students will practice explaining word meanings using evidence from the sentence or paragraph.

Display a familiar sentence with one underlined word. Model thinking aloud: 'I do not know this word, so I will look at the words around it to help me.' Ask students what clues they notice.
Listen, share ideas, and identify clue words in the sentence.
Read a short passage aloud. Choose one unfamiliar word and model how to use context clues, synonyms, examples, or restatements to infer meaning. Record the word, clues, and meaning on chart paper.
Follow along, answer questions, and help identify clues.
Reread the passage and guide students through 2–3 additional vocabulary words. Ask students to underline clues, discuss possible meanings, and justify answers with evidence.
Work with the teacher to infer meanings, share answers, and explain their thinking.
Assign pairs to complete a short vocabulary practice sheet. Circulate, prompt thinking, and support students who need help finding clues.
Work with a partner to match words and meanings and explain the clues used.
Invite a few pairs to share one word, the context clue, and the meaning. Clarify misunderstandings and reinforce the strategy.
Share responses and listen to classmates' ideas.
Give students one sentence with an unfamiliar word. Ask them to write the word’s meaning and one clue that helped them figure it out.
Complete the exit ticket independently.
Review the strategy: 'Read the word, look for clues, infer the meaning, and check your answer.' Ask students to name one clue they can use tomorrow when they meet a new word.
Students will complete an exit ticket identifying the meaning of an unfamiliar word and the context clue that helped them. Teacher will use observations during guided practice and the practice sheet to assess understanding.
Choose one new word from reading at home or in class. Write the word, the sentence it appears in, one context clue, and a guess for its meaning.
