Matter | Guided Practice
In this 20-minute guided practice lesson, Grade 3 students learn that matter is anything that has mass and takes up space. Students practice identifying and sorting examples of solids, liquids, and gases through teacher-guided discussion and quick partner activities.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| matter | Anything that has mass and takes up space. |
| solid | Matter that keeps its shape. |
| liquid | Matter that flows and takes the shape of its container. |
| gas | Matter that spreads out to fill the space it is in. |
| mass | How much matter an object has. |
Show a book, a cup of water, and an inflated balloon. Ask: 'What do these have in common?' Introduce the idea that they are all matter.
Observe the items, share ideas, and predict what matter means.
State the definition of matter. Briefly explain solids, liquids, and gases with simple examples and gestures or objects.
Listen, repeat key vocabulary, and answer quick questions.
Hold up each picture card or object one at a time. Guide students to name the item and decide whether it is a solid, liquid, or gas. Ask students to explain their choice using sentence frames such as 'I think it is a ___ because ___.'.
Turn and talk with a partner, then share answers aloud and sort items into categories.
Ask 3 quick oral questions: 'Is air matter?' 'Does a rock have shape of its own?' 'What state is water?' Record responses and clarify any errors.
Respond orally, show thumbs up/down, and correct answers when needed.
Review the definition of matter and the three states. End with: 'Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space.'
Repeat the definition, name one example of each state, and summarize learning.
Students restate the key idea: matter is anything that has mass and takes up space. They share one solid, one liquid, and one gas example before ending the lesson.
Teacher observes student responses during sorting and oral questioning, noting whether students can define matter and classify examples of solids, liquids, and gases correctly.
