Plants | Independent Practice
Students will independently explore the basic needs of plants and use observation and reasoning to explain how plants grow and stay healthy. This short lesson is designed for advanced Grade 2 learners to work mostly on their own with brief teacher check-ins.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| plant | A living thing that grows and makes its own food using sunlight. |
| sunlight | Light from the sun that helps plants grow. |
| water | A liquid plants need to live and grow. |
| soil | Dirt where many plants grow and get support. |
| air | The invisible gas all living things need. |
Show a plant or plant picture. Say: 'What does this plant need to grow?' Give brief directions for independent work.
Think silently and point to or write one idea on a sticky note.
Distribute the plant needs worksheet. Remind students to read each item carefully and sort or mark what plants need.
Complete the sorting task independently by circling, matching, or coloring the correct needs.
Ask students to draw or label a healthy plant and add 2-4 needs around it. Circulate and check for understanding.
Draw a plant and label or write the needs it must have to grow well.
Invite two students to share one correct answer. Confirm the main plant needs and clarify any misconceptions.
Listen, compare answers, and correct work if needed.
Restate the big idea: plants need water, sunlight, air, and soil to grow. Ask students to hold up one finger for each need.
Show understanding by counting the plant needs with fingers.
Plants are living things that need water, sunlight, air, and soil to grow. Students should be able to name these needs and show them in a drawing or sort.
Collect the independent worksheet or plant drawing to check whether students can identify and explain the basic needs of plants. Use accuracy of sorting, labeling, and brief explanations as evidence of understanding.
