Matter | Small Group
In this 15-minute small-group lesson, students will learn that matter is anything that has mass and takes up space. They will explore and sort familiar objects by solid, liquid, or gas using simple observations and discussion.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Matter | Anything that has mass and takes up space. |
| Solid | Matter that keeps its own shape. |
| Liquid | Matter that flows and takes the shape of its container. |
| Gas | Matter that spreads out to fill its container. |
| Observe | To look closely and notice details. |
Show a pencil, a cup of water, and a balloon. Ask, 'What do you notice about these objects?' Introduce the word matter and say it is anything that has mass and takes up space.
Share quick observations and repeat the word matter.
Point to each item and model sorting it as solid, liquid, or gas. Use simple language: solids keep shape, liquids pour, gases spread out. Write each word on the board with one example.
Repeat the category names and help match each item to a group.
Give students 3-4 objects or picture cards to sort together. Ask guiding questions: 'Does it hold its shape?' 'Can it pour?' 'Does it fill the space?'
Work together to sort the objects and explain their choices using the vocabulary.
Point to one item at a time and ask students to hold up one finger for solid, two for liquid, or three for gas.
Respond with the correct finger choice and say the category aloud.
Review the key idea: matter is anything that has mass and takes up space. Ask one student to name a solid, liquid, and gas.
Share one example from each category.
Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space. Solids keep their shape, liquids flow, and gases spread out. Students name one example of each.
Formative assessment through sorting activity, oral responses, and the quick finger check. The teacher notes whether students can identify matter and distinguish solid, liquid, and gas.
At home, find one solid, one liquid, and one gas example. Draw each one or tell a family member what you found.
