Story Elements | Small Group
In this 20-minute small-group lesson, students practice spelling and using story element words while identifying characters, setting, and events in a familiar story. The lesson supports reading comprehension and spelling through short oral and written practice.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| character | A person or animal in a story. |
| setting | Where and when a story happens. |
| event | Something that happens in a story. |
Show the three vocabulary words one at a time. Say each word aloud, clap the syllables, and have students repeat. Write each word on the board and point out tricky parts.
Repeat each word, clap syllables, and trace the word in the air while saying it.
Read a short familiar story or review a known story. Ask simple questions: Who is in the story? Where does it happen? What happens first? Model one complete answer using correct spelling of the vocabulary word.
Answer orally and help identify the character, setting, and one event.
Give each student a sticky note or mini-whiteboard. Say a word or clue, and have students write the correct story element word. Then sort three quick examples into character, setting, or event.
Write the spelled word, then place or point to the correct story element category.
Ask students to turn and tell a partner one sentence for each story element, such as 'The character is __.' Invite one or two students to share aloud and correct spelling as needed.
Speak in complete sentences and listen to a partner's response.
Point to each vocabulary card and ask students to read it, spell it aloud, and give one example from the story.
Choral read, spell, and respond with examples.
Review the three story element words together. Ask students to tell one thing they learned about characters, setting, or events and celebrate their spelling effort.
