Main Idea | Small Group
In this small-group Grade 2 lesson, students will learn to identify the main idea of a short text and support it with key details. The lesson uses guided reading, discussion, and sorting activities to help students practice listening for what a text is mostly about.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| main idea | What a passage is mostly about. |
| detail | A small piece of information that supports the main idea. |
| key detail | An important detail that helps explain the main idea. |
| topic | The subject the text is about. |
Ask students what a story or paragraph can be about. Introduce the idea that good readers look for what the text is mostly about. Write the words main idea and detail on the board.
Share ideas, listen, and repeat the vocabulary words.
Read a short paragraph aloud. Model thinking aloud: identify the topic, ask what the text is mostly about, and point out key details that support the main idea. Fill in a simple graphic organizer with the group.
Listen, answer guiding questions, and help identify the main idea and details.
Read a second short paragraph. Ask students to choose the main idea from two or three options. Have them point to details in the text that match the main idea.
Discuss choices, cite details, and explain answers using sentence frames such as 'I think the main idea is ___ because ___.'.
Give students a set of short passages or sentence strips. Support students as they match each passage to a main idea card and separate detail cards. Provide immediate feedback and prompts as needed.
Work together to match passages, sort details, and explain how the details support the main idea.
Give each student one short passage and a graphic organizer or exit ticket. Ask students to write the main idea and one or two details.
Complete the assessment independently with minimal support.
Review the definition of main idea and ask students to share one strategy they used today. Reinforce that details help readers prove the main idea.
Share responses and restate the lesson focus.
Today we learned that the main idea is what a text is mostly about, and details help support it. Students will remember to ask, 'What is this mostly about?'.
Students will complete an independent exit ticket or short organizer by identifying the main idea and at least one supporting detail from a grade-level passage.
