Main Idea | Guided Practice
Students will practice spelling and identifying the main idea in short, simple sentences and mini-passages. Through guided practice, they will listen, read, say, and write key words that support the main idea.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| main idea | The most important idea in a sentence or short passage. |
| detail | A small piece of information that supports the main idea. |
| spell | To write words using the correct letters. |
| clue | A hint that helps us figure out a word or idea. |
Show a simple sentence and ask, "What is this mostly about?" Model finding the main idea using one example.
Listen, answer orally, and repeat the main idea.
Read a short passage aloud. Ask students to identify the main idea and one key spelling word that matches it. Write the word on the board and model spelling it aloud.
Choral respond with the main idea and help spell the target word.
Give a second short passage. Ask students to underline or point to clues, then choose the correct spelling from two options written on the board.
Use clues to choose the correct word and write it on paper.
Have students compare answers with a partner and say the main idea and spelling word aloud.
Discuss with a partner, check spelling, and correct mistakes.
Review the main idea, detail, and spelling words from the lesson. Praise accurate responses and correct errors gently.
Repeat key vocabulary and share one thing they learned.
Ask students to finish the sentence: "The main idea is..." and "I spelled the word..." Then restate the lesson goal and celebrate effort.
Teacher will use observation and student work from the guided practice to assess whether students can identify the main idea and spell the target word correctly.
