Context Clues | Mini Lesson
In this 30-minute mini lesson, Grade 2 students learn how to use context clues in a sentence to figure out an unknown spelling word. Students practice listening for clues, choosing the best word, and checking if it makes sense in the sentence.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| context clues | Hints in the words and pictures around an unknown word that help you figure out its meaning or spelling. |
| sentence | A group of words that tells a complete thought. |
| clue | A small piece of information that helps solve a problem. |
| meaning | What a word or sentence tells us. |
Display a simple sentence with one missing word. Read it aloud: 'The dog wagged its ___.' Ask students what word would make sense and why.
Listen, suggest possible words, and explain how the sentence helps them decide.
Model how to use context clues. Say the sentence, think aloud, and highlight helpful words. Example: 'The dog wagged its tail.' Explain that 'dog' and 'wagged' help us know the missing word is 'tail.' Point out that the sentence must make sense.
Repeat the sentence, identify clue words, and say the missing word with the teacher.
Give 3 short sentences with one missing spelling word each. Read each sentence aloud and ask students to find the clue words before guessing the missing word. Write student ideas on the board and confirm the best choice.
Turn and talk or respond orally, use clue words to solve each sentence, and explain their thinking.
Direct students to complete 2-3 new sentences on paper by writing the word that best fits each sentence. Circulate and support students who need help.
Work independently to use context clues and write the correct words.
Review answers as a class and ask students to name the clue words that helped them solve each sentence.
Share answers, compare strategies, and listen for how context clues helped.
Ask students to finish the sentence: 'I can use context clues to help me because ___.' Review that good readers and spellers use nearby words to solve unknown words.
Give students 3 short sentences with missing words to solve at home. Ask them to circle the clue words and write the word that best fits each sentence.
