Character Analysis | Mini Lesson
Students will learn and practice spelling words used to describe characters, such as brave, kind, and shy. They will connect spelling to character analysis by reading short examples, identifying traits, and writing simple sentences using target words.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| character | A person or animal in a story. |
| trait | A word that describes what a character is like. |
| analysis | Thinking carefully about a character to understand them better. |
| brave | Not afraid to do hard or scary things. |
| kind | Friendly and caring toward others. |
Display 3 simple character trait words and read them aloud. Model how to tap out or chunk tricky parts of each word.
Repeat the words, point to letters as they spell aloud, and practice writing each word once.
Read a short character example aloud. Think aloud about the character’s actions and choose a trait word that fits. Write the word on the board and highlight spelling patterns.
Listen, identify the trait, and help spell the word together.
Show 3-4 more character scenarios. Ask students to decide which trait word matches and spell it with support.
Say the trait, spell it orally, and write it on their whiteboards or in notebooks.
Ask students to choose 2 trait words and write one sentence for each about a character.
Write sentences using correct spelling and clear meaning.
Give an exit ticket with one short character description and one sentence frame. Collect and check for correct trait word spelling and understanding.
Read the prompt and write the trait word or sentence independently.
Review the words learned and ask students how spelling can help us talk about characters clearly.
Share one trait word and one way a character showed that trait.
Students review the spelling words, name one character trait, and explain how a character’s actions can show that trait.
Formative assessment through teacher observation, notebook work, and an exit ticket that checks spelling accuracy and trait understanding.
