Display 3-4 familiar words. Read each word aloud and ask students to say the word, clap the syllables, and share what it means.
Repeat words, clap syllables, and give simple definitions or examples.
Model how to use a picture clue and a sentence clue to figure out a word. Think aloud with one example from a familiar text or sentence.
Listen, respond to questions, and help identify the clue that gives the meaning.
Give pairs of word cards, picture cards, synonym cards, and antonym cards. Explain how to match or sort the cards by meaning.
Work with a partner to match, sort, and discuss why cards belong together.
Post four choices around the room such as picture, example, synonym, and antonym. Read a word and have students move to the best match.
Choose a corner, explain their thinking, and listen to classmates.
Read a short familiar passage aloud. Pause to ask students to identify a vocabulary word and use clues in the text to explain it.
Listen, answer questions, and restate word meanings in their own words.
Ask students to choose 2 words, write each word in a sentence, and draw a small picture or symbol for one word.
Complete the writing and drawing task in notebooks or on a recording sheet.
Invite a few students to share one word, its meaning, and how they figured it out. Review key ideas from the lesson.
Share responses and restate one strategy for learning vocabulary.
Review the strategy 'Use clues, think about the word, and say it in your own words.' Celebrate students for reading and using vocabulary carefully.
Choose 3 vocabulary words from the lesson. With a family member, say each word, tell its meaning, and use it in a sentence. Draw one picture for your favorite word.
