Vocabulary | Mini Lesson
Students will learn how to figure out the meaning of unfamiliar words by using context clues from the sentence and nearby text. The lesson is designed for a challenging Grade 2 class and includes guided practice, partner talk, independent practice, and a brief assessment.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| vocabulary | Words we know and use when reading, speaking, and writing. |
| context clues | Hints from the words and pictures around an unknown word that help us understand it. |
| infer | To make a smart guess using clues and what we already know. |
| definition | What a word means. |
| synonym | A word that means almost the same as another word. |
Display one unfamiliar word in a sentence. Think aloud to model how to look for clues in the sentence and picture. Ask students what hints they notice.
Listen, point out clues, and share quick ideas with a partner.
Define context clues and model using 1-2 examples from the shared text. Highlight clue words, synonyms, and illustrations. Record thinking on a chart.
Repeat key terms, listen for clues, and help identify the word meaning.
Read aloud several short excerpts. Pause to ask, 'What does the word mean? Which clue helped you?' Support students in using sentence evidence.
Choral respond, discuss with partners, and explain their thinking using sentence frames.
Give pairs vocabulary cards and short sentences. Model one match, then circulate and prompt students to justify matches with clues from the text.
Match words to meanings and explain why each match makes sense.
Have students complete a short sheet or notebook task: choose 3 unknown words from sentences, write the guessed meaning, and underline the clue.
Work independently to infer meanings and show evidence from the text.
Give a brief 5-item check: read a sentence, identify the clue, and choose or write the word meaning. Review responses quickly.
Complete the assessment independently.
Invite students to share one word they learned and the clue that helped them. Reinforce that good readers use context clues often.
Share learning aloud and listen to classmates.
Review the strategy: notice an unknown word, look around it for clues, make an inference, and test the meaning in the sentence. End by naming one class example and celebrating how readers use context clues to grow vocabulary.
Students will complete a short exit check requiring them to use context clues to determine the meaning of unfamiliar words in sentences. Teacher will score responses for accurate meaning and evidence from the text.
