Vocabulary | Assessment Review
Students will review and practice grade-level vocabulary by using context clues, pictures, oral discussion, and simple sentence reading. The lesson is designed as an assessment review to help the teacher check student understanding of word meanings and usage.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| vocabulary | words we learn and use when we read, write, and speak |
| context clues | words or pictures around a word that help us figure out its meaning |
| review | to practice something again before a test or check |
| meaning | what a word tells us or stands for |
| sentence | a group of words that tells a complete thought |
Show 3–4 familiar vocabulary words and ask students to say what each word means. Briefly review the idea of vocabulary as 'words we know and use.'
Look at the words, say meanings aloud, and share one word they already know.
Model how to use a picture and a sentence to figure out a word’s meaning. Think aloud using one target word and point out the context clues.
Listen, repeat the target word, and identify the clue that helped explain the meaning.
Lead students through 4–5 vocabulary cards. Ask them to match each word to a picture or choose the correct meaning from two simple choices.
Work with the teacher to match words, explain choices, and say each word in a sentence.
Give students a short review sheet or exit ticket with 3 items: match, circle the meaning, and use one word in a sentence.
Complete the task independently to show what they know.
Review answers with the class and correct any misunderstandings. Reinforce accurate vocabulary use.
Check work, fix mistakes, and explain one answer.
Review the day’s target words and ask students to share one new word they can use at home or in class. Remind them that good readers use context clues to understand vocabulary.
Students will complete a short independent vocabulary review/exit ticket with matching, multiple-choice meaning, and one sentence-use item. Teacher will use responses to check understanding of word meanings and context clue use.
Choose one vocabulary word from the lesson, draw a picture for it, and write one simple sentence using the word.
