Ask students to name characters from a familiar story and describe them using simple traits. Record responses on the board.
Turn and talk about a favorite character and share one describing word.
Model how to analyze a character by thinking about what the character says, does, thinks, and feels. Use a familiar text and point to evidence.
Listen, repeat key vocabulary, and help find examples from the story.
Read or reread selected pages. Pause to ask guided questions about actions, thoughts, and feelings. Fill in a class chart together.
Listen, answer questions, and suggest trait words with evidence.
Give pairs a graphic organizer and trait word bank. Support students as they write one trait and one piece of evidence.
Work with a partner to choose traits and explain why they fit the character.
Ask students to complete a short response: describe the character using one or two traits and evidence from the text.
Write or draw their response using words, pictures, or both.
Say actions, thoughts, or feelings from the story and have students hold up or match trait cards.
Participate in the game and explain their choices.
Ask: What did we learn about characters today? How do we know a character is kind, brave, or worried?
Share one thing they learned and one trait they can explain.
Students share one character trait and one piece of evidence before ending the lesson. The teacher restates that good readers use words, actions, thoughts, and feelings to understand characters.
Choose a character from a favorite book at home. Tell or write one trait about the character and one detail that shows it.
