Government | Assessment Review
Students review the basic purpose of government, the jobs of local leaders, and how rules help communities. This lesson is designed as a teacher-led review with partner talk, sorting, and quick oral responses to prepare students for an advanced Grade 2 understanding of government.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| government | The people and jobs that help run a city, state, or country and make rules. |
| rule | An instruction people follow to keep everyone safe and fair. |
| leader | A person who helps guide others and make decisions. |
| mayor | The leader of a city or town. |
| community | A group of people who live, work, and play in the same area. |
Ask: What rules do we follow at school? Why do we have them? Connect student ideas to the need for rules in a community.
Turn and talk with a partner, then share one rule and one reason it matters.
Explain that government is a group of people who help make rules, solve problems, and keep communities safe. Briefly review mayor, police officer, and judge as examples of leaders or helpers in government.
Listen, repeat key words, and answer short oral questions.
Show picture cards and ask students to sort them into 'government helps' or 'not government help' with teacher support. Use examples such as fixing roads, keeping parks safe, and serving food at a restaurant.
Work with a partner to sort cards and explain each choice using vocabulary words.
Ask higher-level questions: How are rules in school and community alike? What might happen if a town had no rules? How does a mayor help people?
Respond in complete sentences, compare ideas, and give reasons for answers.
Give 3 fast prompts on the board, such as 'Name one leader,' 'Tell one rule and why it matters,' and 'Describe one job of government.'
Write or say answers independently, then self-correct with teacher feedback.
Review the big idea: Government helps communities work well by making rules and helping people. Invite students to name one new fact they learned or remembered.
Share one takeaway and listen to class recap.
End with a class choral response: 'Government helps people and communities by making rules and solving problems.'
