Ask: 'What is a lesson you learned from a story or movie?' Introduce the word theme as the big message in a story.
Share a simple idea from a story they know and listen to the new word theme.
Read or retell a short story aloud. Think aloud: 'What happens? What do the characters learn? What message does this story teach?' Write a simple theme sentence such as 'Be kind' or 'Do not give up.'
Listen, watch for clues, and repeat the theme sentence with the teacher.
Read a second short story or one part of the first story again. Guide students with questions: 'What did the character do? What happened at the end? What can we learn?' Help students choose from simple theme choices if needed.
Answer questions, point to story clues, and say the theme with teacher support.
Ask students to turn and tell a partner the theme using the sentence stem: 'The theme is ___. I know because ___. ' Circulate and support.
Tell a partner the theme and give one clue from the story.
Review: 'Theme is the big message or lesson.' Invite a few students to share the theme one more time.
Repeat the definition and share the theme aloud.
End by saying, 'A theme is the big message or lesson in a story.' Ask students to give a thumbs-up if they can find a theme with help.
