Story Elements | Review Lesson
Students will review story elements by coding simple actions and events in a familiar story sequence. They will practice identifying characters, setting, problem, and solution while using unplugged coding steps to retell the story.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Character | A person, animal, or other figure in the story. |
| Setting | Where and when the story happens. |
| Problem | The trouble or challenge in the story. |
| Solution | How the problem gets fixed. |
| Sequence | The order that events happen in. |
| Code | A set of directions that tells something what to do. |
Show the cover of a familiar story and ask students to name the character and setting. Record responses on the board.
Share ideas, point to details, and listen to classmates.
Explain that coding is giving clear steps in order, just like telling a story in sequence. Model with one simple story event using code cards.
Repeat the steps aloud and identify the matching story element.
Read or retell the story. Pause to guide students in naming the character, setting, problem, and solution. Add each part to a class story map.
Help fill in the story map and use code cards to show the order of events.
Give pairs a small set of story pictures or event cards. Model how to place them in order and match each part with a simple code direction.
Work with a partner to sequence the story and act out or place code cards for each event.
Ask students to complete a simple draw-and-label or oral response activity: name one character, one setting, one problem, and one solution.
Complete the task independently and check answers with a partner.
Invite a few students to share how coding helped them remember story elements and sequence.
Explain one story element and one code step they used.
Review the four story elements together and celebrate that coding helps us keep ideas in the correct order. Ask students to share one thing they remember about the story.
