| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| habitat | the place where an animal lives and gets what it needs |
| feature | a part of an animal’s body that helps it live |
| adaptation | a body part or behavior that helps an animal survive |
| camouflage | colors or patterns that help an animal blend in |
| predator | an animal that hunts other animals |
Show one animal picture and ask students to notice what they see and wonder how the animal survives.
Share observations using sentence frames such as 'I notice...' and 'I wonder...'.
Model with 2 animals, naming body parts and linking them to habitat needs. Example: 'A duck has webbed feet to help it swim in water.'
Repeat key vocabulary and point to matching body parts in the pictures.
Display animal and habitat cards. Ask students to help match each animal to a habitat and explain why using evidence from the picture.
Work together as a whole class to match cards and give reasons, such as fur for warmth or claws for climbing.
Ask students to compare two animals from different habitats and identify one feature that helps each survive.
Use academic language to compare, such as 'Both have..., but only...'.
Review the main ideas: animals have features that help them live in their habitats.
Chorally respond to quick questions and name one new fact.
End by asking students to complete the sentence: 'One animal feature that helps it survive is ___.'.
Draw an animal in its habitat and write one sentence explaining how one body part helps it survive.
