Statistics | Project Based Learning
Students will collect simple class data, analyze it using pictures and patterns, and create an art-based pictograph collage to show their findings. This project-based lesson blends statistics with art as students work together to sort, count, represent, and explain class information.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| data | information collected about something |
| sort | to put things into groups |
| count | to find how many |
| graph | a picture that shows information |
| pictograph | a graph that uses pictures to show data |
| compare | to think about how things are alike or different |
Show a simple pictograph and ask, 'What do you notice?' and 'Which group has more?' Model how pictures can show information.
Observe the graph, share ideas, and answer comparison questions.
Introduce one class question, such as 'Which color do we like best?' Guide students to vote using sticky notes or picture cards.
Choose one response, place a vote, and help count the class results.
Model how to sort the votes into groups and count each group together using tally marks or dots.
Help sort the data, count each category, and record totals with support.
Explain that students will turn the data into an art collage pictograph. Demonstrate how each picture stands for one vote and how to arrange them neatly.
Plan where each category will go and decide how to show the data with pictures and color.
Circulate to support cutting, gluing, counting, and checking accuracy. Ask prompting questions about totals and comparisons.
Build the collage, glue pictures in rows, label categories, and make sure the number of pictures matches the data.
Invite groups or the class to view the final projects and ask students to explain what the graph shows.
View each project, describe patterns, and compare which categories have more or less.
Lead a brief reflection: 'What did we learn from our art graph?' and guide cleanup.
Share one thing learned, help tidy materials, and leave the space organized.
Review the completed art graph and have students say one fact they learned from the class data. Celebrate that art can help us show and understand information.
Teacher assesses students through observation, accuracy of the pictograph collage, participation in sorting and counting, and oral explanations during the share-out. Use the final product to check understanding of data representation and comparison.
