Solar System | Standard Lesson
Students will learn basic facts about the solar system while creating a colorful art collage of the sun and planets. The lesson combines art-making, observation, and simple labeling to help students identify the planets in order.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Solar System | The sun and all the planets and space objects that move around it. |
| Sun | The star at the center of our solar system. |
| Planet | A round object in space that travels around the sun. |
| Orbit | The path a planet takes around the sun. |
| Collage | Artwork made by putting different pieces of paper or other materials together. |
Show a solar system image. Ask students what they notice about the sun and planets. Introduce the vocabulary words and explain that students will make their own solar system collage.
Observe the image, answer simple questions, and repeat new vocabulary words.
Demonstrate how to glue a large sun near one side of the paper and place planets in order. Show how to use circles or cut shapes for each planet.
Watch, ask questions, and help name the planets in order if able.
Circulate to support cutting, gluing, and sequencing planets. Remind students to leave space for labels and to choose colors carefully.
Cut, arrange, glue, and decorate their solar system collage.
Invite students to label the sun and planets with help as needed. Encourage details like stars, rings, or patterns.
Write labels or copy them from the board and add finishing touches.
Lead a quick gallery walk or partner share. Prompt students to say one thing they made or learned. Guide clean-up.
Share artwork, listen to classmates, and clean materials.
Review the solar system order together and celebrate the finished art. Ask students to point to the sun and name one planet they remember.
Teacher observes student participation, correct sequencing of planets, use of materials, and ability to label or identify parts of the solar system during the activity and share-out.
At home, draw your favorite planet or look at the night sky with a family member and tell one thing you notice about space.
