Display 8 to 10 advanced vocabulary words and ask students to sort them into categories such as tone, structure, and meaning. Circulate and prompt students to justify their choices.
Individually sort the words, then compare answers with a partner and explain reasoning.
Review key terms and highlight distinctions among close words such as concise vs. precise, diction vs. syntax, and tone vs. connotation. Model each with one strong sentence.
Take notes, ask clarification questions, and record one original example for two terms.
Project 4 to 5 weak or repetitive sentences and ask students to improve them using more exact vocabulary. Think aloud for the first example, then release responsibility.
Rewrite sentences in pairs, replacing vague words with stronger vocabulary and sharing revisions aloud.
Provide short passages with blank spaces or underlined words. Ask students to choose the best vocabulary word based on context and explain why alternatives do not fit.
Work in small groups to complete the challenge and defend their choices using context clues.
Prompt students to write a short paragraph on a familiar topic using at least three reviewed vocabulary words accurately and naturally.
Write independently, focusing on correct and purposeful word choice.
Ask students to share one word they will intentionally use in future writing and one strategy for choosing stronger vocabulary.
Orally share responses or write a brief reflection if time is limited.
Students leave with one vocabulary word they plan to use in their next writing assignment and one reminder about choosing words based on context, tone, and precision.
